evenfall vs Character.AI

Character.AI is the biggest character-chat platform: millions of user-made characters, a public discovery feed, and free apps on iOS and Android. evenfall is a private AI chat app where your characters are personal rather than published - you build them, they live in your account next to a real assistant, your conversations are never used for training, and deleting one deletes it for real.

Where Character.AI wins

Be honest about the scale gap, because it is the main reason people stay.

  • The library. Millions of characters other people already built and tuned, searchable and browsable, most of them free to chat with immediately. evenfall has no equivalent - you build what you want, or start from a template.
  • The community. Publishing a character and watching other people use it is a real part of the appeal, and evenfall does not do it at all.
  • Native mobile apps. evenfall is a responsive web app you can install as a PWA; Character.AI has proper iOS and Android apps.
  • Group chats and character voices. Multiple characters in one scene, and hearing them speak.
  • A genuinely free tier. You can use Character.AI all day for nothing. evenfall's free tier is 10 messages a day, and character creation is a paid feature.

If what you want is browsing and sharing, Character.AI is the better product and it isn't close.

Where evenfall is different

evenfall approaches character chat from the privacy side rather than the platform side.

Your characters are yours, and private

A persona you build lives in your account. There is no feed, no publishing step, and no one else chatting with your character. Each one keeps its own conversations, and your About-me note stays out of them unless you explicitly share it.

No training, real deletion

evenfall never uses your conversations to train models. Deleting a conversation removes the database row outright - no soft-delete, no shadow archive, no recovery window - and account deletion is immediate. Conversation content is encrypted at rest at the application layer with per-conversation keys held outside the database. That is stronger than ordinary disk encryption and weaker than end-to-end encryption: the server decrypts to generate a reply. Compare that honestly against a platform whose privacy policy permits training on what you write.

It answers, and it stays in character

The most common Character.AI complaint is the filter: a scene stops, the character drops out of role, and you get a disclaimer. evenfall's stance is no refusals-by-default and no moralizing on legal requests, and when you cast it as a character it plays the part straight. Be clear about the boundary, though: evenfall is SFW-positioned. If you specifically want unfiltered NSFW output, Venice AI is the honest recommendation, not this.

Long scenes that stay coherent

One story lives in one thread with its full history synced across your devices, plus a rolling summary of the scene so a long session doesn't lose the plot. Folders and pins keep several stories apart.

And it's also a real assistant

The same account does code, writing, study, automatic web search with sources, and file attachments. Your characters sit next to the tool you already use rather than in a separate app. Start at personas, or read how to create your own AI character.

frequently asked

What is the best Character.AI alternative?

It depends which part you're replacing. For a bigger uncensored model roster with image and video generation, Venice AI. For a private app where you build your own characters, keep them to yourself, and get real deletion plus no training on your chats, evenfall. For simply browsing more community characters, Character.AI is still the largest catalogue.

Is evenfall uncensored?

Not in the "anything goes" sense, and we won't claim otherwise. evenfall does not refuse by default, does not moralize at you over legal requests, and keeps a character in role rather than breaking the scene with disclaimers - which is what most people mean when they say a character-chat app is too filtered. It is SFW-positioned; for explicitly unfiltered NSFW output, Venice AI is the better fit.

Does Character.AI train on your conversations?

Its privacy policy permits using your conversations to train and improve its models, which is normal for a free consumer platform at that scale. evenfall never trains on conversations, on any plan. Policies change - check Character.AI's current policy rather than relying on this page alone.

Can I import my Character.AI characters into evenfall?

Not automatically yet. You can recreate one in a couple of minutes by pasting its description into the character editor - the enhance pass expands rough notes into a full character, and you can generate a portrait for it. Character-card import is on the roadmap, not shipped.

Is it free?

evenfall's free tier is 10 messages a day with no card required, but building your own personas is a paid feature (from $8.99/month, cheaper annually, or an anonymous one-time crypto pass). Character.AI is free to use with an optional subscription, so if cost is the deciding factor it wins.

Will my characters be public?

No. There is no publishing step and no discovery feed in evenfall - a persona you create is visible only to you, and each keeps its own conversations.
